YWCA Columbus Condemns Police Violence in Canton

YWCA Columbus extends our condolences to Frank Tyson’s family and loved ones as we learn more about his tragic death at the hands of Canton police on April 18.

“I can’t breathe.” Words spoken by Eric Garner in 2014, by George Floyd in 2020, and - now - by Frank Tyson in 2024. It’s clear that despite reform and calls to ban excessive force, the institution of policing continues to fail our communities. This, along with the recent death of Santiago Elias Alfaro Munoz by Whitehall police, underscores the fact that policing practices in Ohio have not reformed and will continue to take lives with impunity.

To transform community safety, we must transform the institution of policing beyond reform and address head-on their oppression of marginalized communities. YWCA Columbus remains committed to relentlessly pursuing peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all
