Mass Incarceration in Ohio - A Women’s Issue

Prison reform is often portrayed as a masculine issue, but did you know the female prison population is one of the fastest growing populations, with black women being incarcerated at twice the rate of white women? In fact, Ohio has the seventh largest prison population in the country and the fourth largest female population in the country.

Furthermore, the female prison population is increasingly made up of women serving sentences for nonviolent drug-related crimes. It is clear that drug related incarceration is an important issue profoundly impacting women - especially women of color - in our community!

Join YWCA Columbus and the Ohio Organizing Collaborative for an informative conversation on the impact of drug related incarceration on women and families and the role of racial bias in our criminal justice system. Also, you’ll learn about the steps you can take to help encourage our state to decrease incarceration and increase local treatment and diversion programs that promote safety and rehabilitation.

about the program

“I believe we can change the world if we start listening to one another again. Simple, honest, human conversation.” Margaret J. Wheatley

Do you have a safe space to talk about how racism and sexism impact you and the people you care about?

As a nation, we’ve experienced horrific events within the last year that have forced us to acknowledge that sexism and racism are very much ingrained in our society. From white nationalists marching in Charlottesville, VA to Hollywood’s sexual abuse victims finding their voice, men and women across the country are starting to engage in conversations about injustices faced by many women and people of color in our country.

Let’s Talk About It is a guided conversation series that invites men and women in Central Ohio to explore current events in news and popular culture from a social justice lens. We’ll discuss practical approaches to advocacy, ally ship and solidarity that you can begin to use in your everyday life.
