What is the role of self-care in the struggle for dignity, freedom, and justice?

Join YWCA Columbus for an interactive discussion on second-hand trauma—a type of trauma typically faced by front-line advocates and activists within marginalized communities—and the role of wellness and self-care in sustainable social justice movements. In addition to the discussion, two instructors will lead us through practical breathing techniques and a trauma-informed, beginner level yoga session.

Audre Lorde said it best when she said, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation. And that, is an act of political warfare.” So whether you’re an activist, an organizer, a direct service provider, or just someone constantly “getting into it” with friends, family, and strangers on Facebook, this event was created with you in mind!

This event is free and open to both men and women. Yoga mats will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Please wear comfortable, flexible clothing for the yoga portion of the event.

About YWCA Columbus
With a mission of “eliminating racism, and empowering women,” YWCA Columbus has worked for over 130 years to respond to the needs of our community in meaningful and lasting ways. This includes providing affordable housing, emergency shelter, child care and critical services to help stabilize some of the most vulnerable women and families struggling to make ends meet; as well as hosting events and programs to develop women’s leadership and social justice awareness within the Central Ohio community.
