Our Stories, Your Impact

I am doing my part and I just do it in my own unique way.

The Leadership for Social Change program did so much for me on so many levels. I was the graduation speaker, and I talked a lot about feeling imposter syndrome when I first started in the program. In the beginning, I felt so out of place; I was like all these women are doing amazing work, and I’m just a librarian. But, I feel like one of the biggest lessons I learned was the fact that one of the major differences between equality and equity is history, is knowing the background and the context, why things are the way they are, and why equal isn’t always fair and equitable. Me going out and teaching history and giving context and background as to why things are the way they are now – that this didn’t happen by accident, that this was done by deliberate choices – it is the work, you know? We’re all talking about how we make social change, how we become agents of change – and it just helped me realize that I’m already doing that work. I am doing my part and I just do it in my own unique way. I hope that – through my work – I can help inspire more people to learn about their own history, their own genealogy, the place they live in, how it came to be, how they came to be here, and a better understanding of why things are the way they are. For example, people experiencing homelessness didn’t choose that. That’s not the life they want – or deserve – it’s happened through the systems in place, and by understanding that, and knowing we can do something about it, we can make the world more equitable and fair. LSC really emboldened me to do a lot of things I’d never done before.
