YWCA Columbus Reacts to DeWine's Signage of State Operating Budget

YWCA Columbus is deeply disappointed in the passage of Ohio’s state budget, which reflects a broader policy choice to prioritize tax relief for the wealthiest individuals and investments — like the $600 million allocation for a new Cleveland Browns stadium — over direct aid to Ohio families in need of shelter, food security, and medical care.

Despite our efforts, our proposal for the Ohio Legislature to grant the Franklin County Board of Commissioners the authority to explore alternative revenue sources for sustainably funding emergency shelters was not adopted. This is especially troubling given the urgent and growing need: homelessness in Franklin County rose by more than 7% in 2025, and the shelter system now faces a $25 million funding gap.

This funding cliff is why the recommendations of the Funding Review Advisory Committee (FRAC) are more critical than ever. FRAC is tasked with evaluating public funding practices and exploring alternative revenue sources to address our community’s emergent needs, including human services and shelter. Their work is essential to developing long-term, sustainable strategies that ensure no one is left behind as our region continues to grow and we need them, and county and city officials, to hear from YOU about your support of emergency shelter.

YWCA Columbus remains steadfast in advocating for sustainable local solutions that protect our most vulnerable, knowing that our true power resides in community — not in the state house.
