YWCA Columbus Statement on Ohio House Bill 6

Categories: News, Social Justice, Statement

The Higher Education & Workforce Committee passed Ohio House Bill 6 (HB6) out of committee today. This bill would force transgender children to play on the sports team that aligns with their gender assigned at birth, rather than their true gender identity. If passed, the bill will present physical and emotional danger for trans children who just want to play their sport. Despite numerous voices speaking out against this bill, including testimony from YWCA Columbus, the bill passed the committee on an 8-6 vote line.

We are disappointed by today’s movement, but we will continue to fight for trans youth, because trans girls are girls and trans women are women, and they deserve to play. We stand for and empower ALL girls and women. Until gender justice, just is.
